Postdoctoral Positions within the Wallenberg Initiative on Networks and Quantum Information (WINQ)

Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen and moved to Stockholm in 2007, where it is hosted by KTH and Stockholm University.

Research at Nordita has a broad profile in modern theoretical physics.

Project Description

Two postdoctoral positions within the Wallenberg Initiative on Networks and Quantum Information (WINQ) at Nordita. WINQ is a research program supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The positions are aimed at those who wish to conduct independent theoretical research at the intersection of quantum information theory and complex dynamical systems, with the goal of tackling significant open challenges within and between these research areas. The positions are located at Nordita, which is jointly operated by Stockholm University, KTH, and Uppsala University, and offers a stimulating international research environment. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to collaborate with other KAW-funded initiatives in Sweden, including the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT).

The scientific focus of the positions includes, but is not limited to, the following research areas:

Quantum Information and Quantum Processing (QIP):

  • quantum technology, including quantum devices, quantum information theory, quantum sensing, and quantum computing;
  • quantum algorithms;
  • quantum simulators;
  • detection and correction of quantum errors;
  • coding and sharing of quantum information.

Complex Dynamical Networks (CDN):

  • learning in neural networks;
  • chaotic dynamical systems;
  • deep and recurrent networks;
  • spatiotemporal multiscale systems;
  • multiplex and multilayer networks;
  • neurobiological networks.

Successful candidates are expected to conduct independent and original theoretical research within quantum information and quantum processing, complex dynamical networks, or at the intersection of these broadly defined areas. Applicants with interdisciplinary research profiles are particularly encouraged to apply. We seek individuals who can relate to our ongoing activities, which implies both consistency with and complementarity to WINQ's scientific focus.

Responsibilities

The position involves conducting research in accordance with the themes from the project description.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier obtained degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, elected positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.

In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence. A successful candidate is expected to possess:

  • A PhD in theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent.
  • Strong theoretical competence relevant to one or more of the research areas mentioned above.
  • Excellent ability to express oneself in spoken and written English.

Meritorious:

  • Scientific publications in one or more of the research areas described above.
  • Documented ability to conduct independent research.
  • Experience with, or strong interest in, interdisciplinary research.
  • A collaborative attitude and a clear vision of how to contribute to and collaborate within the WINQ program.

We seek individuals driven by the promotion of science through collaboration and openness. The stated qualifications should be seen as guiding and are not a checklist of requirements. We encourage candidates with complementary strengths and diverse research backgrounds to apply, including those who may not meet every requirement. There are no formal teaching requirements. However, for candidates interested in teaching, Nordita has connections with nearby institutions (Stockholm University, KTH, and Uppsala University), where teaching opportunities can be arranged. The position is intended to promote the academic development of researchers at the beginning of their careers aiming for a future career in academia or advanced R&D positions in emerging industry.

In the selection process, particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • Scientific quality, originality, and independence in previous research.
  • The relevance of the applicant's research profile in relation to WINQ's core areas.
  • Publication merits in relation to career stage.
  • The applicant's vision for future research and collaboration within WINQ.

About the Position

The position is full-time and fixed-term, lasting a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years. The intended start date is during the first half of 2026, or another date by agreement.
